BJD says ‘truth prevailed’ after Bill defeat

The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Saturday reacted to the defeat of the Constitution amendment bill on women’s reservation, stating that “truth has prevailed” following the outcome in the Lok Sabha.

The proposed legislation sought to implement 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures from 2029 and increase the strength of the Lok Sabha to over 800 seats. However, the bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority during voting.

According to the voting figures, 298 members supported the bill while 230 MPs voted against it. Out of the 528 members who participated in the voting process, the bill required at least 352 votes to be passed.

Reacting to the result, BJD leaders said the outcome reflected the will of the House, asserting that the development validated their stance on the issue. The party maintained that the legislative process must reflect broader consensus on matters of national importance.

The defeat of the bill has sparked sharp political reactions across party lines, with the debate over women’s reservation and electoral reforms continuing to intensify.
