Railways Undergoing ‘Super-Fast Transformation’: Vaishnaw
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday said Indian Railways is witnessing a “super-fast transformation”, with major investments in infrastructure, safety, technology and passenger services aimed at benefiting the common man and middle class.
Replying to the discussion on Demands for Grants 2026–27 in Parliament, the minister highlighted a record allocation of ₹2.78 lakh crore for the national transporter, marking a sharp rise in budgetary support and enabling faster project execution and modernisation.
Vaishnaw said the railway network now spans over 1.37 lakh km, with more than 25,500 trains operating daily. Freight capacity has significantly increased, making Indian Railways one of the world’s largest freight carriers, while track expansion, electrification and safety infrastructure have seen rapid growth over the past decade.
On safety, he noted a 90% reduction in accidents, supported by investments of around ₹1.2 lakh crore and the rollout of the indigenous Kavach train protection system across thousands of kilometres.
The minister emphasised that affordability remains a priority, with Railways subsidising nearly 45% of passenger fares, amounting to about ₹60,000 crore annually. Around 70% of coaches are non-AC, ensuring accessibility for common citizens.
Highlighting modern train services, Vaishnaw said over 160 Vande Bharat trains and 60 Amrit Bharat trains are currently operational, with more under production. Plans are also underway to introduce 200 new intercity trains and 238 suburban trains for Mumbai to improve short-distance travel.
He added that station redevelopment is progressing at a large scale, with around 1,300 stations identified and hundreds nearing completion, alongside improvements in cleanliness and passenger amenities.
The minister also pointed to the role of technology, including AI-based systems and the RailOne app, which has seen widespread adoption for ticketing and passenger services.
On employment, Vaishnaw said Railways has generated about 5 lakh jobs over the past decade, with ongoing recruitment drives ensuring transparency and wider access.
He reaffirmed that the government remains committed to providing safe, affordable and modern rail services, while strengthening connectivity across regions, including border and remote areas, as part of India’s broader development vision.
