Odisha Utsav Celebrates State’s Rich Heritage

Odisha Utsav showcases state’s rich cultural heritage in Kolkata: Minister Suraj

Bhubaneswar/Kolkata, Mar 9 : Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and traditions were celebrated at the first-ever Odisha Utsav organised in Kolkata, with Odisha Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj highlighting the vital role of the Odia diaspora in promoting the state’s identity across the globe.

Addressing the festival on Sunday, the Minister said the participation and contribution of Non-Resident Odias would play a significant role in achieving the vision of Viksit Odisha 2036, which aims to transform the state into a developed region by 2036.

The event was organised to strengthen connections with the Odia diaspora and showcase Odisha’s cultural heritage beyond the state’s borders. Suraj said Non-Resident Odias have been instrumental in spreading awareness about Odisha’s art, literature, traditions and heritage across India and abroad.

He described members of the Odia diaspora as “cultural ambassadors” of the state, noting that although many Odias live outside Odisha, their emotional and cultural ties with their homeland remain strong.

The Minister also highlighted the role of the Directorate of Odisha Paribar, functioning under the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, which works to support and assist Odias living outside the state.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Suraj said the Government of Odisha remains dedicated to the welfare and development of the Odia diaspora community.

During the festival, the Minister felicitated several distinguished Odia writers from the diaspora along with members of the Odia community residing outside the state.

The event showcased Odisha’s vibrant folk traditions through exhibitions of traditional cuisine, handloom and handicraft products. Cultural performances featured classical and folk dance forms including Odissi, Chhau, Ghumura, Dhemsa, Sambalpuri dance, Sahi Jata and Pashumukha, reflecting the diverse artistic traditions of the state.
