AAIB Says AI-171 Probe Ongoing, Media Reports Speculative

New Delhi, Feb 12: The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Thursday clarified that the investigation into the Air India Flight AI-171 accident is still underway and has not been finalised, dismissing media reports claiming otherwise as “incorrect and speculative.”

In a statement issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the AAIB categorically stated that no final conclusions have been reached regarding the accident. The bureau emphasised that aircraft accident investigations are detailed, technical and evidence-based processes aimed at identifying root causes and improving aviation safety.

“The investigation is still in progress. No final conclusions have been reached,” the statement said.

The AAIB conducts its investigations in accordance with the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2025, and in compliance with India’s obligations under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 13, which lays down global standards for aircraft accident investigations.

The bureau noted that the Preliminary Report released earlier only contained factual information available at that stage of the probe. The Final Investigation Report, which will include conclusions and safety recommendations, will be published after the investigation is completed in line with established international norms.

Urging media organisations to exercise restraint, the AAIB said unverified and premature reporting can cause unnecessary public anxiety and undermine the integrity of the ongoing professional investigation.

Reiterating its commitment to transparency and procedural integrity, the AAIB assured that it will adhere to the highest standards of aviation safety while conducting the probe.
