Odisha Seeks Central Support for World-Class Science City in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, Feb 11 : The Odisha government has sought central assistance for setting up a world-class Science City on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, aiming to position the state as a major hub for science, technology and innovation.

Odisha Science & Technology Minister Krushna Chandra Patra formally raised the proposal during a high-level meeting with Union Minister for Science & Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh in New Delhi. The project envisions a state-of-the-art facility spread over 100 acres of land already identified by the state government.

According to officials, the proposed Science City will feature interactive exhibits, immersive learning spaces and advanced research facilities designed to inspire young minds and promote scientific temper. The initiative is expected to serve as a catalyst for the growth of Odisha’s technology ecosystem and strengthen its contribution to national scientific missions.

During the meeting, Patra discussed aligning Odisha’s regional scientific initiatives with the Centre’s flagship programmes. He emphasised that robust State-Centre collaboration would be crucial in transforming Odisha into a premier scientific and industrial destination.

The discussions also included plans for establishing a dedicated Space Innovation Hub to support startups and research in space technology. The proposed hub would leverage the expertise of the Odisha Space Applications Centre (ORSAC) and research institutions such as Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla. The initiative aims to position Odisha as a leader in satellite data applications and space-tech entrepreneurship.

In line with the national Bio-E3 Policy, the minister further proposed setting up Bio e-Cells across the state. These centres would focus on high-performance biomanufacturing, promote sustainable and eco-friendly technologies, and facilitate the commercialisation of biotechnology research.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh assured full support from the Centre, including technical expertise and financial assistance, to ensure the successful implementation of the proposed initiatives.

Patra expressed gratitude for the Centre’s continued guidance and reiterated the state government’s commitment to fostering scientific development and innovation-driven growth in Odisha.
