Odisha CM Plans Rourkela Airport, Steel Expansion

Odisha Government to Upgrade Rourkela Airport, Expand Steel Plant: CM Majhi
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday said his government is committed to upgrading the Rourkela airport and expanding the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) as part of a comprehensive strategy to boost industrial and infrastructural development in the region.
Speaking during his visit to Rourkela, the Chief Minister described the city as a major steel hub and an emerging smart city with immense growth potential. He said strengthening key infrastructure would play a crucial role in accelerating economic activity and improving connectivity.
Majhi noted that upgrading Rourkela airport to Category C has been a long-standing demand of local residents. The proposed upgrade would enable the airport to handle moderate air traffic and accommodate fewer than three million passengers annually, significantly improving regional air connectivity.
On industrial development, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the state government’s support for the expansion of the Rourkela Steel Plant, stating that the move would enhance production capacity, generate employment, and contribute to the state’s overall economic growth.
He added that the government is working in coordination with central agencies and stakeholders to ensure timely implementation of these projects, which are expected to strengthen Rourkela’s position as a key industrial and urban growth centre in Odisha.
