Flood alert issued in North Odisha

Odisha Government Issues Flood Alert for Balasore, Mayurbhanj as Rivers Rise

The Odisha government has sounded a high alert in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts amid growing concerns over potential flooding in the northern parts of the state. The warning follows a sharp rise in the water levels of major rivers, including the Budhabalang, Subarnarekha, Jalaka, and Sono.

Officials said the rivers, swollen due to continuous rainfall and upstream inflows, could breach danger marks and inundate low-lying areas by Monday. In response, the state administration has initiated preemptive measures to ensure public safety.

“The Balasore district administration has begun evacuating residents from vulnerable areas, particularly Baliapal and Basta blocks,” a senior official stated. Teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), along with fire and emergency services, have been deployed to aid in rescue and relocation efforts.

People living in flood-prone regions have been urged to move to nearby shelters immediately. Authorities are also keeping a close watch on river gauges and rainfall patterns to assess further risks.

The state government has asked local administrations to remain vigilant and ensure all flood preparedness protocols are followed to mitigate potential damages.
