Nepali Foreign Minister Urges Odisha for Impartial Probe into Student’s Death

Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, has urged Odisha’s Education Minister, Suryabanshi Suraj, to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the death of a Nepali student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT).
During a telephonic conversation on Wednesday, Minister Deuba called for legal action against those responsible and emphasized the need to create a safe learning environment for other Nepali students at the university.
The request follows the tragic death of Prakriti Lamsal, a 20-year-old third-year B.Tech (Computer Science) student, who was found dead in her hostel room on February 16 in an apparent suicide. The incident sparked unrest on the KIIT campus, with students demanding a thorough inquiry.
A statement from Minister Deuba’s office highlighted her concerns over the safety and well-being of Nepali students studying in India. She urged the Odisha government to resume classes in a secure and supportive atmosphere.
Indian authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, Nepal’s foreign ministry has assured continued engagement with Indian officials to ensure justice for the deceased student.
Lamsal’s death has raised questions about student safety and mental health support on university campuses, both in India and abroad. The Nepalese community and student organizations have called for greater transparency in the probe.
Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.
