Vedanta transforms Kalahandi into archery hub

Vedanta’s Grassroots Sports Initiative Transforms Kalahandi into Emerging Archery Hub
Bhubaneswar, May 15: In the remote village of Chanalima in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, 17-year-old Rachana Majhi has emerged as a symbol of transformation through sport, as Vedanta Aluminium’s grassroots sports initiative continues to nurture rural talent and turn Kalahandi into a rising centre for archery excellence.
Introduced to archery at the age of 13 through the company’s outreach programme, Rachana has grown from a hesitant beginner into a promising athlete with state-level medals, national squad selections, and recognition on larger sporting platforms.
Her journey reflects a broader sporting movement taking shape in one of Odisha’s historically underserved districts, where traditional tribal skills are being channelled into competitive success.
Nearly 80 young athletes are currently undergoing intensive training in archery and athletics under Vedanta Aluminium’s Grassroots Sports Initiative, which aims to identify and nurture sporting talent from rural and tribal communities.
In tribal regions of Odisha, archery has long been embedded in cultural traditions and indigenous lifestyles. Vedanta’s programme is now helping convert this inherited skill into professional achievement by providing scientific training, expert coaching, nutritional support, professional-grade equipment, and exposure to competitions at district, state, and national levels.
The initiative has already produced significant results. In the 2026 financial year alone, nine athletes from the programme participated in national competitions, 60 competed at the state level, and 73 took part in district and zonal tournaments. Collectively, they secured three national medals and 94 state medals.
The programme also benefits from mentorship by renowned archers including Olympians Rahul Banerjee and Dola Banerjee, who are helping athletes develop technical precision and competitive discipline.
Local coaches, including national-level archer Simanchal Kadraka, are playing a key role in guiding young participants.
“Earlier, the children had interest but no direction. Now, they have access to proper coaching and exposure. You can see the confidence in how they train and compete,” Kadraka said.
Coach Shambhu Nath Parida highlighted that exposure to competitions outside their villages is opening new opportunities and aspirations for many children from remote areas.
Beyond sporting achievements, the initiative is also contributing to social transformation in Kalahandi by building confidence, encouraging mobility, and creating career aspirations among rural youth.
For athletes like Lina Majhi from Karlapada in Bhawanipatna, sports have become a source of identity and pride. Once shy and hesitant, she now confidently represents her district in competitions.
The programme is also promoting gender inclusion, with nearly half of the participants being girls. Many of them are excelling in state and national-level events, challenging traditional barriers surrounding women’s participation in sports.
The growing impact of the initiative has also received institutional recognition. During FY26, four athletes associated with the programme were honoured by the Kalahandi district administration for their achievements.
As participation and performance levels continue to improve, young archers from Kalahandi are increasingly qualifying for inter-state competitions, strengthening Odisha’s presence in Indian archery.
Through its grassroots sports mission, Vedanta Aluminium is using sport as a tool for empowerment, helping rural youth unlock opportunities, build confidence, and envision brighter futures beyond geographical limitations.
