PM Modi Opens Global Astronomy Olympiad

PM Modi Inaugurates 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics
New Delhi, Aug 12 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) via video message, welcoming over 300 participants from 64 countries to India. Highlighting the country’s rich scientific heritage, he said, “In India, tradition meets innovation, spirituality meets science, and curiosity meets creativity.”
Citing ancient astronomer Aryabhatta’s contributions, the Prime Minister noted that India has long been a hub for sky-watchers and innovators. He showcased the country’s astronomical infrastructure, including the high-altitude observatory in Ladakh at 4,500 metres, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope in Pune, and participation in global mega-science projects like the Square Kilometre Array and LIGO-India.
Mr. Modi recalled landmark space achievements such as Chandrayaan-3’s historic Moon landing, the Aditya-L1 solar mission, and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s recent journey to the International Space Station. He underscored India’s commitment to STEM education through Atal Tinkering Labs, the ‘One Nation One Subscription’ scheme, and significant investments in research, especially encouraging women’s participation.
Calling for science to address real-world challenges, he urged young scientists to explore how space technology can aid in disaster prediction, climate monitoring, and improved connectivity for remote areas. “The sky is not the limit, it’s just the beginning,” he concluded, affirming India’s belief in international collaboration and innovation.
The Olympiad, hosted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, marks its largest edition to date.
