Odisha Shines Bright in Solar Revolution

Odisha Sets the Benchmark in India’s Solar Revolution
India’s clean energy transition is gathering unprecedented momentum, with rooftop solar emerging as a cornerstone of the country’s energy future. The success of PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has transformed solar energy from a policy initiative into a nationwide movement. As India rises to become the world’s second-largest solar growth market, Odisha has distinguished itself as one of the leading states driving this transformation.
Within just two years of the scheme’s launch, more than 40 lakh households across the country have benefited from rooftop solar installations. The Government of India now aims to reach 75 lakh households by the end of 2026. This remarkable progress has strengthened energy security, reduced electricity costs for families and accelerated India’s journey towards achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
Among all states, Odisha has emerged as a shining example of effective implementation and citizen participation. Nearly one lakh consumers in the state have already benefited under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, enabling households to generate clean energy, reduce monthly electricity bills and contribute to a sustainable future.
The state’s performance during the Month of Solar Campaign has earned national recognition from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Odisha secured:
- 1st Place in Maximum Consumer Applications
- 1st Place in Maximum Rooftop Solar Installations
- 1st Place in Maximum DISCOM Inspections and Verifications
- 3rd Place in Maximum Vendor Registrations
These achievements are not merely awards; they are evidence that Odisha is setting national benchmarks in rooftop solar adoption. Securing the top position in three critical categories reflects the state’s ability to translate policy into action and ensure that the benefits of clean energy reach households quickly and efficiently.
The recognition highlights the visionary leadership of the Odisha Government and its commitment to sustainable development. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, the state has created an enabling ecosystem that encourages consumers to embrace renewable energy.
As the nodal agencies for implementing PM Surya Ghar Yojana in Odisha, the state’s DISCOMs have played a pivotal role in driving consumer awareness, facilitating inspections and ensuring timely grid connectivity. Their dedicated efforts have been instrumental in helping Odisha emerge as a national leader in rooftop solar adoption. The DISCOMs have played a transformative role by creating awareness, facilitating consumer applications, conducting inspections, coordinating with vendors and ensuring smooth implementation on the ground. Their proactive approach has helped Odisha emerge as one of the best-performing states in the country under the PM Surya Ghar programme.
The success story of Odisha demonstrates how strong governance, efficient utilities and active citizen participation can work together to accelerate the clean energy transition. At a time when India is being recognized globally for its solar growth, Odisha stands out as a model state showing how rooftop solar can be scaled effectively and inclusively.
As the nation moves towards the ambitious target of one crore solar rooftops, Odisha’s achievements offer a roadmap for others to follow. The state is not only contributing to India’s renewable energy goals but is also setting new standards in clean energy adoption, consumer empowerment and sustainable development.
The message is clear: India is leading the global solar revolution and Odisha is leading from the front.
