Fresh Low-Pressure Area Forms Over Bay of Bengal, IMD Issues Red Warning for Odisha

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a red warning for extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha following the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. The weather system is expected to trigger heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of the state, raising concerns over further deterioration of the flood situation in Odisha. The IMD has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh, Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coasts from August 16 to 18, citing adverse weather and rough sea conditions. The fresh low-pressure area has developed at a time when Odisha is already grappling with a flood situation in six districts. Around one lakh people have been evacuated from inundated villages and shifted to relief centres as floodwaters continue to affect several areas. Authorities have been asked to remain alert and closely monitor the situation, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas. With more rainfall forecast under the influence of the new weather system, officials are keeping a close watch on rivers, drainage systems and flood-affected regions. The IMD's latest warning has prompted heightened preparedness across the state, with residents in vulnerable areas advised to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
