Bhubaneswar, Aug 29: Odisha Law, Works and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Saturday called for the adoption of an integrated and sustainable agriculture-horticulture model in the Chilika Assembly constituency to enhance farm productivity and improve farmers’ incomes.

Chairing a review meeting on agriculture, horticulture and soil conservation activities in the constituency, Harichandan directed officials to prepare a comprehensive development plan based on the region’s soil conditions, climate and agro-economic potential.

The Minister highlighted Chilika’s potential for both agricultural and horticultural development. The region supports a diverse range of crops, including coconut, mango, jackfruit, cashew, paddy, moong, ragi, kangni, brinjal, pointed gourd and spine gourd.

He emphasised that crop planning should be guided not only by productivity but also by market demand, enabling farmers to secure better and more stable returns. He particularly highlighted the reputation of Banpur moong for its distinctive taste and quality and called for coordinated efforts to promote and brand it in wider markets.

Harichandan also stressed the potential for expanding coconut cultivation in coastal areas around Chilika Lake and directed officials to identify suitable locations for its promotion. He called for increased production of fruits, vegetables, paddy and Shree Anna (millets) in view of their nutritional value and growing market demand.

The Minister underlined the need for cold storage facilities at suitable locations to minimise post-harvest losses and improve the storage and preservation of farm produce. He also encouraged greater focus on organic farming, floriculture, mushroom cultivation and fodder production to diversify farmers’ income sources.

Calling for greater research and innovation in organic agriculture, Harichandan directed officials to explore opportunities for value addition and income diversification. He said strengthening allied agricultural activities could help make farming a more sustainable, remunerative and dignified profession.

The meeting also reviewed soil conservation and rainwater utilisation measures. Officials were instructed to formulate suitable plans for soil and moisture conservation and ensure the optimum utilisation of available water resources.

Harichandan further directed officials to ensure that eligible farmers receive the benefits of various welfare and development schemes implemented by both the State and Central governments.
