The Odisha government has directed all district collectors to ensure the uniform and consistent use of revised English spellings of place names in line with their Odia pronunciation across government offices and institutions.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Arabinda Padhee, issued the direction in a letter to all district collectors on Saturday.
The collectors have been asked to undertake a comprehensive review of nameplates and signboards installed at government offices and institutions in their respective districts. They have also been instructed to ensure that the revised spellings approved by the state government are used consistently.
The move follows a gazette notification issued by the Odisha government on June 22, 2026, directing government offices and institutions to adopt the revised English spellings on their signboards within one month.
For private and non-government institutions, the government has prescribed a period of six months to implement the revised spellings.
According to the department, the decision has already been successfully implemented in several districts of the state.
The latest directive is aimed at ensuring consistency in the official use of place names and bringing English spellings in closer conformity with their pronunciation in Odia.
