Actors Raghubir Yadav, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Zoya Hussain hope their new series “Hunkkaar: The Roar” encourages viewers to reflect on the growing cases of sexual assault against women and young girls.
The JioHotstar series follows the story of a 17-year-old girl, played by Aneet Padda, who accuses a prominent godman, Baapji, portrayed by Yadav, of sexual assault. Her allegation triggers a media storm and a police investigation, while she also faces slut-shaming for speaking out against a revered public figure.
Shaikh plays a police officer investigating the case. Speaking about the subject, she said stories of crimes against women make her angry and that the issue needs greater attention.
The actors believe the show will have served its purpose if even one viewer is encouraged to speak up against sexual violence and question the attitudes surrounding such cases.
“Hunkkaar: The Roar” seeks to examine the challenges faced by survivors, including social judgment and the pressure that can accompany allegations against influential figures.
