India Prioritizes Interests in US Trade

India to Safeguard National Interests in Trade Talks with US: Piyush Goyal
India is actively engaged in discussions with the United States over a proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA), but will move forward only after ensuring that the nation’s and public’s interests are fully protected, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday.
Addressing reporters, Goyal emphasized that the government is committed to a “India First” approach in all its trade negotiations, aligning them with the country’s long-term vision of becoming a developed nation under the Viksit Bharat 2047 roadmap.
“We have said many times that we do not negotiate under pressure,” Goyal stated. “While deadlines can help move talks faster, we will not rush into any agreement unless it serves national and public interest.”
The minister reiterated that India’s trade policy is rooted in strategic prudence and not driven by external pressure or urgency. “It’s important that all negotiations are conducted with care and foresight,” he added.
Goyal’s remarks come amid ongoing talks between India and the US to enhance trade ties and potentially pave the way for a formal bilateral trade pact. Both countries have expressed interest in deepening economic cooperation, but sensitive issues such as tariffs, market access, and digital trade remain key points of negotiation.
India has been taking a measured approach in all trade engagements, focusing on agreements that deliver mutual benefits without compromising domestic priorities.
The statement sends a strong message that while India is open to global partnerships, national interest remains non-negotiable in its economic diplomacy.
