IIT Report Highlights Severe Flood and Drought Risks in 11 Indian Districts

New Delhi: A climate risk assessment report by IIT Guwahati and IIT Mandi, in collaboration with the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP), has flagged 11 districts in India as being at “very high” risk for both floods and droughts. The affected districts include Patna (Bihar), Alappuzha (Kerala), and Kendrapara (Odisha), necessitating urgent mitigation measures.

Titled “District-Level Climate Risk Assessment for India: Mapping Flood and Drought Risks Using IPCC Framework,” the report sheds light on the dual vulnerability faced by these districts due to their exposure to extreme weather events.

The findings also reveal that 51 districts across the country are categorized as “very high” flood risk zones, while 118 districts face “high” flood risks. This dual vulnerability to floods and droughts underscores the critical need for targeted climate adaptation strategies.

“The combination of flood and drought risks makes these regions highly susceptible to both water scarcity and excessive rainfall, which can severely impact agriculture, infrastructure, and livelihoods,” the report states.

The assessment is based on a detailed analysis using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) framework, providing actionable insights for policymakers to prioritize climate resilience measures.

With extreme weather events on the rise, experts are urging immediate intervention in the identified districts to mitigate risks and ensure sustainable development in the face of growing climate challenges.
