Airtel, IBM expand cloud footprint in India

Airtel, IBM to Set Up Two New Multizone Regions for Airtel Cloud in Mumbai and Chennai

Telecom major Bharti Airtel on Wednesday announced a strategic partnership with IBM to establish two new multizone regions (MZRs) for its Airtel Cloud platform in Mumbai and Chennai, strengthening its cloud infrastructure and expanding its enterprise service capabilities across India.

Under the collaboration, Airtel and IBM will jointly develop advanced cloud solutions, leveraging IBM’s expertise in hybrid cloud and AI technologies to enhance Airtel Cloud’s performance, security, and scalability.

With the new multizone regions, Airtel will expand its cloud availability zones from four to ten, supported by next-generation, energy-efficient data centres designed to meet growing demand from Indian enterprises for secure and sustainable cloud infrastructure.

“We are extending the footprint of Airtel Cloud availability zones in India from four to ten, comprising next-gen sustainable data centres,” said Gopal Vittal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Bharti Airtel.

The partnership aims to accelerate digital transformation across industries, providing enterprises with flexible, scalable cloud solutions powered by IBM’s Cloud Satellite and watsonx AI capabilities integrated with Airtel’s robust 5G connectivity.

Officials said the initiative will also support key sectors such as banking, manufacturing, retail, and public services, enabling businesses to deploy critical workloads closer to their operations for improved latency and compliance.

The new data regions in Mumbai and Chennai are expected to go live in 2026, marking a significant step in Airtel’s ambition to position Airtel Cloud as a leading enterprise cloud platform built for India’s digital-first economy.
