Studies Link Popular Diabetes and Weight-Loss Medications to Increased Risk of Stomach Paralysis

Recent studies have found that widely used diabetes and weight-loss medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, are associated with an increased risk of developing stomach paralysis, also known as gastroparesis. This condition weakens the stomach muscles, causing food to remain in the stomach for extended periods, which can lead to various digestive issues.

Ozempic, an approved medication for managing blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients, and Wegovy, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for weight management, are both implicated in these findings.

The studies have raised concerns among healthcare professionals and patients alike, prompting calls for further research and potential reevaluation of these medications’ safety profiles. Patients currently using Ozempic or Wegovy are advised to consult their healthcare providers regarding any symptoms or concerns related to gastroparesis.
