Bajrang Punia Faces Provisional Suspension Over Doping Test Refusal: WFI to Escalate Matter to WADA
In a startling development, wrestler Bajrang Punia has been slapped with a provisional suspension by the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) for his refusal to provide a urine sample during recent trials. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has expressed deep dissatisfaction over NADA’s handling of the situation, claiming they were kept uninformed about the proceedings.
The incident unfolded during the trials held on March 10 in Sonepat to select the men’s national team for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Bishkek. Following his defeat in a bout, Bajrang abruptly left the venue without complying with the doping test protocol, sparking concerns and subsequent action from the anti-doping authorities.
In response to the suspension, Bajrang has been given until May 7 to submit his explanation to NADA, failing which further disciplinary measures may ensue.
Expressing frustration over the lack of communication from NADA, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has announced its intention to escalate the matter to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The WFI alleges that NADA failed to promptly inform them of Bajrang’s suspension, leaving them in the dark regarding the situation.
This turn of events has cast a shadow over the career of Bajrang Punia, one of India’s most prominent wrestlers, renowned for his achievements on the international stage. With the WFI gearing up to take the matter to WADA, the repercussions of this incident may extend beyond the national borders, drawing attention to the adherence to anti-doping regulations in Indian sports.
As the deadline for Bajrang’s response approaches, the wrestling community awaits further developments in this unfolding saga, with hopes for clarity and resolution on the horizon.
