CCPA warns eateries against LPG, fuel charges

CCPA warns eateries against LPG surcharge
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) on Wednesday directed hotels and restaurants not to levy additional charges such as ‘LPG charges’ or ‘fuel cost recovery’ on consumers, terming such practices unfair.
The authority clarified that only applicable taxes can be added to the prices listed on menus, and all operational or input costs must already be included in the displayed price of food and services.
The CCPA warned that imposing extra charges beyond the menu price amounts to unfair trade practices and could invite strict action against violators.
It further said it is closely monitoring such practices across the country and will take necessary steps to safeguard consumer interests.
The directive comes amid growing complaints from customers about eateries adding arbitrary surcharges under various heads, increasing the final bill beyond the listed prices.
