NCW Seeks Action Taken Report from Odisha DGP in College Student Self-Immolation Case

Bhubaneswar, July 13 : The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the shocking case of self-immolation by a college student in Balasore, Odisha, allegedly triggered by sexual harassment. Expressing deep concern over the incident, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Sunday directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Odisha, to submit an action taken report within three days.

Calling the incident “deeply disturbing,” the NCW has emphasized the need for a fair, impartial, and time-bound investigation into the matter. The commission has asked the Odisha Police to take strict action against all those found responsible and ensure that justice is delivered at the earliest.

In addition to seeking accountability from law enforcement, the NCW has also urged the state authorities to provide free medical and psychological assistance to the victim, who is currently battling for her life after sustaining critical burn injuries.

The case has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over women’s safety on college campuses in the state. The NCW’s intervention aims to ensure swift legal action while underlining the importance of institutional support for survivors of sexual harassment.

The Odisha Police is yet to release an official statement detailing the current status of the investigation. Meanwhile, women’s rights groups and student organizations across the state have called for stern punishment for the accused and better safety mechanisms in educational institutions.
