PM Modi pays tribute to 1,000 years of Somnath’s resilience
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to 1,000 years of the resilience of the Somnath temple, marking a millennium since the first attack on the sacred shrine in 1026 AD.
In an Op-Ed shared to commemorate the historic milestone, the Prime Minister said that despite repeated assaults over centuries, Somnath continues to stand tall as a symbol of India’s enduring spirit. He emphasised that the story of Somnath is not merely about a temple, but about the unbreakable courage and self-respect of countless children of Bharat Mata who safeguarded the nation’s culture and civilisation.
Sharing excerpts from the Op-Ed on social media platform X, Shri Modi wrote, “2026 marks 1000 years since the first attack on Somnath took place. Despite repeated attacks subsequently, Somnath stands tall. This is because Somnath’s story is about the unbreakable courage of countless children of Bharat Mata who protected our culture and civilisation.”
In a post in Hindi, the Prime Minister said that Somnath Jyotirlinga represents the saga of indomitable courage and self-respect of millions who always placed India’s culture and civilisation above everything else. He described the temple as a timeless symbol of faith, resilience and civilisational continuity.
