Odisha Sounds Flood Alert, Evacuates Villages

Odisha Government Issues Flood Alert in Balasore, Mayurbhanj as Rivers Rise
The Odisha government has sounded a high alert in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts amid rising water levels in several major rivers, signaling a potential flood threat across northern parts of the state.
According to officials, rivers including the Budhabalang, Subarnarekha, Jalaka, and Sono are swelling due to continuous rainfall in the region and upstream areas. The water levels are expected to breach danger marks by Monday, prompting the state administration to initiate precautionary measures.
“The Balasore district administration has begun evacuating residents from low-lying areas in Baliapal and Basta blocks,” a senior official confirmed. “With the support of ODRAF (Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force) and fire and emergency services teams, people are being moved to safer shelters to prevent casualties or loss of property.”
The government has also directed local authorities to monitor river embankments and maintain round-the-clock vigilance. Relief centers have been set up and food, water, and medical supplies are being arranged in advance.
Residents have been urged to stay alert, follow advisories, and cooperate with the administration in evacuation and rescue efforts.
With the monsoon intensifying, the state’s disaster management teams remain on high alert to tackle any emergency arising from possible flash floods or river overflows.
