Nagraj Manjule explores OTT with Matka King

Acclaimed filmmaker Nagraj Manjule has described his foray into the OTT space as both exciting and nerve-wracking, as he gears up for the release of his debut web series Matka King.
Speaking about the project, Manjule admitted to feeling uncertain while stepping into a new medium. “I’m exploring this medium for the first time, I’m learning it. I wanted to try it. I don’t know whether I got it right or not. I like making films and I’ll continue to do so,” he said.
The filmmaker revealed that the idea for the series had been with him for nearly six years before finally taking shape as a full-fledged show.
Matka King, created and written by Abhay Koranne and directed by Manjule, follows the fictional journey of a sharp-minded cotton trader played by Vijay Varma. The character goes on to devise a new gambling system known as “Matka,” which becomes central to the narrative.
Known for his critically acclaimed films, Manjule’s transition to OTT marks a significant step in his career as he experiments with long-format storytelling. The series is expected to delve into ambition, risk, and the socio-economic backdrop surrounding the rise of the Matka system.
The project has already generated curiosity among audiences, given Manjule’s distinct storytelling style and the intriguing premise of the show.
