India Sends Additional Aid to Cyclone-Hit Sri Lanka as Death Toll Rises to 486

India has dispatched additional movable modular bridge systems to Sri Lanka as part of its expanding humanitarian assistance effort, aimed at reconnecting communities cut off by the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. The equipment, sent on Thursday, is expected to play a crucial role in restoring transport links and supporting relief operations in remote, flood-affected regions.

Sri Lanka continues to grapple with widespread flooding, landslides, and severe damage to national infrastructure following weeks of extreme weather that began on November 16. Many districts remain isolated, complicating the delivery of aid and hampering rescue and recovery efforts.

According to official figures released Thursday evening, at least 486 people have been confirmed dead, while 341 remain missing amid the continuing crisis. Disaster-response teams fear that the toll may rise further as access improves to cut-off areas.

Authorities say the modular bridges provided by India will help restore essential services by enabling temporary crossings over collapsed or washed-out sections of roadways. India has been actively supporting Sri Lanka since the onset of the disaster, supplying relief materials, technical assistance, and emergency infrastructure.

Sri Lankan officials have expressed gratitude for the international support, noting that the scale of destruction has overwhelmed local capacity. With more rains forecast in certain regions, emergency teams remain on high alert as rescue and rehabilitation operations continue across the island nation.
