GRSE Plans Profit-Sharing Deals with Startups It Incubates

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), a prominent warship manufacturer and a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has announced plans to establish profit-sharing agreements with startups it incubates during the commercialization phase of product development.

The Kolkata-based company is keen on fostering innovation within the shipbuilding sector and has allocated a dedicated fund from its research and development (R&D) budget specifically for this purpose. GRSE aims to support startups in developing products and services that can be utilized internally and eventually commercialized.

Commodore P R Hari (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE, emphasized the company’s commitment to nurturing entrepreneurship in the defense sector. “We have earmarked a sizable portion of our R&D budget for nurturing and supporting startups in developing products and services for captive use, which can later be commercialized,” he stated in an interview with PTI.

This initiative is part of GRSE’s broader strategy to enhance its capabilities and stay competitive in the rapidly evolving defense landscape. By collaborating with innovative startups, GRSE aims to leverage new technologies and solutions that can streamline operations and improve the quality of its offerings.

The move has been welcomed by industry experts, who see it as a positive step towards building a robust ecosystem for defense manufacturing in India. Startups will benefit from GRSE’s extensive industry experience, access to resources, and potential market opportunities.

As GRSE continues to forge partnerships with emerging companies, it hopes to contribute to India’s goal of self-reliance in defense production, aligning with the government’s “Make in India” initiative. The company is actively seeking innovative ideas and solutions that can enhance its product line and overall operational efficiency.
