Financial Times Expert Casts Doubt on PM Modi’s High-Income Goal for India by 2047
Martin Wolf, Chief Economics Commentator at the Financial Times, expressed skepticism on Friday regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious target of transforming India into a high-income economy by 2047. Wolf suggested that achieving such status might be unattainable within the timeframe specified, but he remained optimistic about India progressing to an upper middle-income nation by then.
Speaking at an event organized by CUTS, Wolf also predicted that India would evolve into a significant global player and attain the status of a superpower by 2047.
“India wishes to become a high-income country by 2047. That is unlikely to be achieved. But it should become an upper middle-income country by then,” remarked Wolf during the event.
Prime Minister Modi has previously articulated his vision for India to achieve economic prosperity and development milestones, including aspirations for the country to reach high-income status within the next few decades.
The remarks by Martin Wolf underscore the challenges and realistic expectations surrounding India’s economic trajectory and global positioning over the coming decades.
