Voting Reflects Faith in Democracy: Murmu

Voting reflects citizens’ faith in democracy, says President Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday said voting is not merely a political expression but a reflection of citizens’ faith in the democratic process, as she addressed the 16th National Voters’ Day celebrations in the national capital.

Highlighting the strength of Indian democracy, the President said its foundation lay not only in the size of the electorate but also in the depth of democratic spirit, noting that even the elderly, divyang voters and people in remote areas exercise their right to vote.

She appreciated aware voters and all those associated with the election machinery, under the leadership of the Election Commission, for ensuring inclusive participation and for working towards the goal of “no voter is left behind”.

Referring to this year’s theme, “My India, My Vote: Indian Citizen at the heart of Indian Democracy”, she said it reflected the central role of voters in the democratic system and underscored the importance of the right to vote.

The President said the right to vote gave concrete expression to the constitutional ideals of justice, equality and political empowerment, and that the principle of “One Person, One Vote” was based on the firm faith of the Constitution makers in the wisdom of the common people.

She urged all citizens to exercise their franchise responsibly, free from temptation, misinformation and prejudice, and to strengthen the electoral system through the power of conscience.

Congratulating young voters who received their voter identity cards, President Murmu said today’s voters were the architects of India’s future and called upon them to contribute actively to nation-building.

National Voters’ Day is observed every year on January 25 to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India and to promote electoral awareness and participation.
