Vice-President stresses youth role, lifelong learning at MGR Institute convocation

Vice-President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday said that the role of youth is critical in building a Viksit Bharat and underscored the importance of continuous learning in the age of Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies.

Addressing the 34th Convocation Ceremony of Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute here as the Chief Guest, the Vice-President congratulated the graduating students and said the convocation marks the beginning of a new phase of life filled with greater responsibilities and opportunities. Extending New Year greetings, he expressed confidence that the graduates would contribute positively to society through professional competence, compassion and commitment.

Recalling Tamil Nadu’s historic role as a centre of knowledge and maritime trade, Shri Radhakrishnan said merchants from these shores once carried India’s ideas, ethics and culture across the world, reflecting the nation’s civilisational confidence and openness to learning and exchange.

Referring to the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Vice-President said achieving the goal requires active participation from every citizen, especially the youth. He urged students to contribute meaningfully to nation-building and social progress.

Highlighting rapid technological transformation, he said Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies are reshaping all sectors, making continuous upskilling essential. He called upon students to adopt a lifelong learning mindset, regularly upgrade their skills and engage with new technologies even beyond their core disciplines.

The Vice-President also emphasised the importance of value-based education, stating that academic excellence must be anchored in ethics, integrity and social responsibility. Advising students on life beyond the campus, he said success and failure are integral parts of life and should be faced with balance, resilience and mental strength.

He cautioned graduates against shortcuts and unhealthy comparisons, encouraging them to set clear goals, progress steadily and recognise their unique strengths. Concluding his address, Shri Radhakrishnan urged the students to lead lives of purpose and service, contributing to both individual excellence and collective national development.

Tamil Nadu Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma. Subramanian, Chancellor of the institute Dr. A. C. Shanmugam and other dignitaries were present at the ceremony.
