Congress Probes Odisha Dalit Torture Incident

Congress Condemns Alleged Torture of Dalit Men in Odisha, Forms Probe Panel
The Odisha Congress has expressed deep concern and anguish over the alleged inhumane treatment of two Dalit men in Ganjam district, who were reportedly tortured on suspicion of cattle smuggling. The shocking incident has prompted the party to set up a fact-finding committee to probe the matter.

According to police reports, the two Dalit men were subjected to severe physical abuse. They were allegedly tonsured, brutally assaulted, and forced to crawl on their knees while being made to eat grass and drink drain water. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and condemnation from various quarters, especially rights activists and political leaders.

The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) took swift action, with OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das forming a five-member investigation team led by Congress Legislature Party leader Rama Chandra Kadam. The panel has been tasked with visiting the site of the incident, meeting the victims and their families, and preparing a detailed report on the circumstances and motive behind the alleged torture.

“This is a shameful and inhumane act that violates the basic rights and dignity of the victims,” said Bhakta Charan Das. “We will not remain silent until justice is delivered.”

The police have confirmed that nine individuals have been detained in connection with the case, and further investigations are underway.

The Congress party has demanded immediate and strict action against all those involved and called on the state government to ensure the safety and dignity of marginalized communities across Odisha.
