Women-centric films succeed, yet remain scarce

Actors highlight paradox of women-centric films in Bollywood

Despite women-led films proving successful at the box office in recent years, actors say such projects are still rarely made, highlighting a continuing paradox in the Hindi film industry.

According to trade website Sacnilk, several female-driven films between 2024 and 2026 have performed strongly, including Crew, Article 370, Stree 2 and Lokah Chapter One. However, the 2026 theatrical calendar features only a handful of major women-centric titles.

Among the few such films scheduled for release this year are Mardaani 3 starring Rani Mukerji, Assi featuring Taapsee Pannu and Alpha headlined by Alia Bhatt.

Actors say the situation reflects an industry contradiction — while audiences have repeatedly supported women-led narratives, filmmakers and studios still hesitate to back them in large numbers.

Taapsee Pannu, known for leading socially driven films such as Thappad, Mulk, Pink and Saand Ki Aankh, has spoken candidly about the issue. She noted that although such films have proven their commercial viability, actors continue to struggle to find strong and meaningful roles.

Industry observers say the success of past women-centric films demonstrates audience interest in diverse storytelling. Actors hope that the coming years will see more producers and studios investing in female-driven narratives and expanding opportunities for women in mainstream cinema.
