Williams, Bharti Signal New Football Era

Williams, Bharti Join National Camp, Marking New Era for Indian Football

Indian football is set to enter a new chapter as the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has included overseas-based players Ryan Williams and Abneet Bharti in the national camp ahead of the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Bangladesh on November 18 in Dhaka.

The decision signals a progressive shift in AIFF’s approach, opening opportunities for Indian-origin footballers and players willing to relinquish foreign citizenship to represent the national team.

The training camp kicked off in Bengaluru on Thursday, with both Williams and Bharti expected to join the squad soon. Their inclusion is being viewed as a strategic move aimed at strengthening India’s depth and competitiveness at the international level.

Ryan Williams, who has experience in competitive leagues abroad, brings technical sharpness and versatility to India’s midfield setup. Meanwhile, Abneet Bharti, a dynamic defender who has played professionally in Europe and Asia, adds defensive stability and global exposure to the lineup.

AIFF officials said the move is part of a broader vision to globalize Indian football, blending international experience with domestic talent.

If the experiment proves successful, it could pave the way for more Indian diaspora players to don the national colors, giving Indian football a long-awaited boost on the global stage.
