Vice-President Urges Farmer Prosperity, Innovation

Vice-President Calls for Transforming Farmers into Entrepreneurs at TNAU Event
Coimbatore, April 27, 2025 – Vice-President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, today emphasized the rich legacy of inclusivity and freedom of expression in Bharat while urging a transformational shift in the agriculture sector from food security to farmer prosperity. Speaking at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore on the theme “Fostering Agri-Education, Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Viksit Bharat,” the Vice-President highlighted the vital role of innovation, citizen participation, and research in nation-building.
Addressing a large gathering, Shri Dhankhar observed that Bharat’s legacy as the world’s oldest and most vibrant democracy is exemplified through its deep-rooted inclusivity and respect for freedom of thought. He cautioned citizens to be mindful that these attributes become national assets in strengthening the country’s progress.
Focusing on agriculture, the Vice-President called for empowering farmers by encouraging them to step beyond production and become entrepreneurs. “We must move from food security to farmer prosperity,” he asserted, urging institutions like TNAU to lead this transformation. He emphasized the need for farmers to engage in value addition, marketing, and establishing industries based on farm produce.
Highlighting the importance of innovation, Shri Dhankhar stressed that research must be farmer-centric, aiming for real-world impact. He advocated for seamless integration between agricultural research institutions and farmers through initiatives like Krishi Vigyan Kendras.
Applauding government schemes like PM Kisan Nidhi Samman and the country’s robust cooperative system, the Vice-President noted that the agricultural sector is receiving unprecedented support. He proposed that fertilizer subsidies could be directly transferred to farmers, potentially providing them with around ₹35,000 annually.
Remembering Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, an alumnus of TNAU and a pioneering figure in India’s Green Revolution, Shri Dhankhar paid rich tributes to his contributions, calling him one of the proudest sons of Bharat.
He concluded by invoking the timeless wisdom of Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar, who exalted farmers as the foundation of humanity. “The farmer is the architect of our destiny,” he declared.
Governor of Tamil Nadu Shri R.N. Ravi, State Minister Smt. N. Kayalvizhi Selvaraj, and other distinguished dignitaries were present at the event, which celebrated the pivotal role of agricultural education and innovation in building a Viksit Bharat.
