Tribal Couple Paraded for Intra-Clan Marriage

Tribal Couple Tied to Plough, Paraded in Koraput for Marrying Within Same Clan
In a shocking incident of caste-based discrimination and social ostracism, a young tribal couple was allegedly tied to a wooden plough and paraded through Nadimeitiki village in Koraput district’s Narayanpatna block for marrying within the same clan.
According to police sources, the disturbing incident occurred on Sunday and came to light after a video of the couple being humiliated went viral on social media, drawing widespread outrage.
The couple reportedly belonged to the same tribal community and defied traditional clan restrictions by marrying within the same gotra (clan), which is considered taboo under customary tribal norms.
In the viral video, the couple can be seen tied to a wooden plough, being led through the village by several locals. Eyewitnesses say the act was intended to “punish” the couple for violating age-old community rules and to serve as a “lesson” to others.
Local police have launched an investigation and assured strict action against those involved in the inhumane act. “We have taken suo motu cognizance of the viral video. A case has been registered, and action will be taken as per law,” said a senior police official from Koraput.
Social activists and human rights groups have condemned the incident, calling it a gross violation of personal freedom and dignity. They have demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators and better awareness and enforcement of laws protecting tribal and marital rights.
The incident has once again sparked debate over the clash between traditional practices and individual rights in tribal communities, particularly concerning marriage norms.
District officials have reached out to the couple to ensure their safety and protection while counseling efforts are also underway to educate the local community on legal rights and consequences of such actions.
Further developments are awaited as the investigation progresses.
