Trade Union Strike Halts Odisha Traffic

Nationwide Strike by Trade Unions, Drivers Disrupts Traffic Across Odisha

Vehicular movement across Odisha, including the capital city of Bhubaneswar, was severely disrupted on Wednesday due to a nationwide strike called by a joint forum of central trade unions and drivers’ associations.

The strike, observed as a Bharat Bandh, began early Wednesday morning and saw widespread participation from workers affiliated with various sectors. The protest is aimed at opposing the central government’s labour reforms, particularly the implementation of the four new labour codes, increasing contractualisation of jobs, and the privatisation of public sector undertakings (PSUs).

The joint forum comprises 10 major central trade unions, including the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), and others like AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, and UTUC. The strike also received strong backing from transport unions, including auto-rickshaw, taxi, and truck driver associations, further amplifying its impact on daily commutes and transport of goods.

In Bhubaneswar, several roads witnessed traffic jams and decreased public transport availability. Many commuters were seen stranded at bus stops, while educational institutions, business establishments, and government offices reported lower attendance.

The protestors demanded the rollback of the four labour codes, which they allege dilute workers’ rights and pave the way for exploitative work conditions. They also voiced strong opposition to policies promoting privatisation of PSUs and called for better protection for informal and gig economy workers.

Police and local administration have been deployed in sensitive areas to maintain law and order, and the situation is being closely monitored.

The strike is part of a larger nationwide movement, as similar protests and traffic disruptions were reported from other states as well.
