Tigers to Roam Debrigarh Sanctuary Soon

Odisha to Introduce Tigers in Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary
In a major step towards reviving the big cat population in the state, the Odisha government has announced plans to introduce tigers in the Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary located in Bargarh district.
The announcement was made on National Tiger Day by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Wildlife, Prem Kumar Jha, who stated that Debrigarh is being considered as a suitable site for the reintroduction of tigers.
“We have received technical permission from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) to convert Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary into a tiger reserve,” Jha said, adding that the initiative aligns with the state’s broader strategy to strengthen wildlife conservation and biodiversity.
The move is part of Odisha’s ongoing efforts to revive its dwindling tiger population and promote ecological balance. Debrigarh, known for its rich biodiversity and adequate prey base, has been identified as an ideal habitat for tigers after careful assessment by wildlife experts.
Officials said that the reintroduction process will follow strict scientific and ecological protocols to ensure the safety of the animals and the success of the habitat adaptation. Additional steps will also be taken to enhance protection mechanisms and infrastructure within the sanctuary.
The proposed tiger reserve will not only contribute to wildlife conservation but is also expected to boost eco-tourism in western Odisha, creating opportunities for local communities.
