Ten Patients Killed in ICU Fire at Cuttack Hospital
At least ten patients were killed after a major fire broke out in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of SCB Medical College and Hospital in the early hours of Monday, officials said.
Confirming the incident, Mohan Charan Majhi said the blaze erupted in the ICU ward of the government-run hospital in Cuttack, leading to the deaths of ten patients.
The Chief Minister rushed to the hospital soon after the incident and reviewed the situation with senior officials and hospital authorities. He also announced a probe to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
According to the Chief Minister, around 11 hospital staff members sustained burn injuries while attempting to rescue patients and shift them to safer wards. The injured were provided immediate medical treatment at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident. The Prime Minister announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased.
Fire services personnel rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control, while patients from the affected ward were evacuated and moved to other parts of the hospital.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident as efforts continue to determine the circumstances that led to the tragic fire.
