Tata Power Hosts Odisha’s First State-Level Urja Mela

Tata Power Hosts First State-Level Urja Mela in Odisha, Engaging 470+ Students in Energy Conservation Movement
Bhubaneswar: Tata Power organized the inaugural State-level Urja Mela in Bhubaneswar, bringing together over 470 students from across Odisha. The event, a precursor to Tata Power’s annual National Urja Mela conducted during National Energy Conservation Week, was held under the company’s Club Energy initiative, which fosters sustainability through hands-on activities, experiential learning, and inclusive participation.
In the past three years, Club Energy has significantly expanded its presence across Odisha. Through Tata Power’s four Discoms — TPCODL, TPWODL, TPNODL, and TPSODL — the initiative has reached more than 500 schools across key regions, including Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Behrampur, and Balasore, cultivating a community of young energy conservation advocates.
Showcasing Creativity and Inclusion
The Urja Mela hosted diverse competitions such as a Science Exhibition, Best Out of Waste models, Painting, Quiz, and an Essay Competition to encourage innovation and environmental stewardship among students. In a gesture of inclusivity, special competitions were organized for visually impaired and deaf students, in alignment with Tata Power’s Pay Autention initiative, aimed at empowering the neurodiverse community.
Eminent Participation
The event witnessed participation from senior Tata Power leaders, including Himal Tewari, Chief Human Resources Officer and Chief of Sustainability and CSR. Prominent personalities like Padma Shri Sabarmatee Tiki, and representatives from UNICEF, UNDP, Tata Steel, IHCL, TCS, and Tata Strive attended, alongside corporate and NGO representatives from the Aditya Birla Group, LTI Mindtree, JSL, World Food Program, and Lighthouse Foundation.
Driving Sustainability Awareness
Speaking at the event, Himal Tewari emphasized Tata Power’s commitment to sustainability:
“Through Urja Mela, we are empowering young minds to lead a greener, more inclusive future. Odisha has shown remarkable momentum in championing sustainability through the Club Energy initiative. We call upon schools and organizations to join us in making conservation a mass movement.”
Highlighting Biodiversity Conservation
A key highlight of the event was Tata Power’s Gaja Sanrakshana initiative, aimed at raising awareness about biodiversity and habitat conservation by protecting the native Asian elephant in Odisha. This initiative underscored the importance of environmental preservation, inspiring students to value and protect natural ecosystems.
The success of the State-level Urja Mela reflects Tata Power’s dedication to nurturing a generation of environmentally conscious individuals, equipping them with the creativity and commitment to combat climate change and drive sustainability.
