Veteran Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh Calls India’s Close 3-2 Win Over New Zealand a “Wake-Up Call”
PARIS: India’s veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh described the team’s narrow 3-2 victory over New Zealand in their Paris Olympics opener as a valuable wake-up call, highlighting the need for improvement ahead of more challenging pool matches.
In a tense encounter on Saturday, India secured the win thanks to a crucial penalty stroke conversion by captain Harmanpreet Singh in the 59th minute. The match, which revealed both strengths and areas for growth, saw Sreejesh acknowledging the need for better performance in future games.
Coach Craig Fulton also expressed satisfaction with the team’s adherence to their strategy despite the close scoreline. “The first match in the Olympics is never easy. New Zealand is a tough team, and while we made some mistakes, there were positive aspects to build on,” Sreejesh added.
