Smog grips Delhi-NCR, air quality worsens

Smog Envelops Delhi-NCR, Air Quality to Worsen After Diwali: Experts
New Delhi: A thick blanket of smog has once again gripped Delhi and its adjoining National Capital Region (NCR) as pollution levels surged amid stagnant winds, dipping temperatures, vehicular emissions, and pre-Diwali traffic rush. Experts have warned that the city’s air quality could deteriorate to the ‘severe’ category a day after Diwali if firecracker emissions rise.
According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), air quality in the region worsened over the past 24 hours, with Ghaziabad recording the highest pollution levels in the country at an AQI of 324, falling deep into the ‘very poor’ category. Noida followed closely, while Delhi, Gurugram, and Greater Noida recorded AQI values of 268, 258, and 248, respectively—all in the ‘poor’ range. Faridabad, with an AQI of 190, remained in the ‘moderate’ category.
Experts from the Air Quality Early Warning System have predicted a steady rise in pollution levels over the next few days.
“The air quality is very likely to be in the ‘Poor’ category on October 18, in the upper end of the ‘Poor’ category on October 19, and in the ‘Very Poor’ category on October 20. It may reach the ‘Severe’ category on October 21 in case of enhanced emissions from firecrackers,” the system’s forecast stated.
Data from the Decision Support System for Air Quality Management in Delhi indicated that stubble burning is expected to contribute 2–5% of Delhi’s pollution early next week, while transport emissions, currently responsible for nearly 16%, remain the leading source.
Meteorologists have also forecast smog and shallow fog conditions across the capital for the next five days, with a weak western disturbance likely from Tuesday onwards. The combination of low wind speeds and cooler nights is expected to further trap pollutants near the surface, exacerbating poor air conditions.
Experts have urged citizens to avoid outdoor activities during early morning and late evening hours and to use masks or air purifiers when possible. Authorities are also monitoring compliance with anti-firecracker and dust control measures ahead of the festive weekend.
