Sitharaman urges responsible, inclusive tech use

Sitharaman Flags Weaponisation of Tech, Urges Use for Global Good
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday emphasised the need to ensure that technology serves humanity and is not misused or “weaponised” for narrow interests.
Speaking at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 in Mumbai, the minister expressed concern over the growing trend of technological advancements being exploited for divisive or harmful purposes.
“The simple motive is that technology should be for the public good. At no point of time should it get weaponised,” Sitharaman said.
She highlighted India’s emergence as a global fintech leader, setting new benchmarks in innovation, inclusion, and scalability through initiatives such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and digital public infrastructure.
Reiterating India’s commitment to responsible innovation, Sitharaman urged global stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring that technology remains a tool for empowerment and inclusive growth, rather than control or coercion.
