SIS Reinstates Sanyal as GIPE Chancellor

SIS Revokes Sanjeev Sanyal’s Removal as GIPE Chancellor, Cites “Misunderstanding”

In a dramatic reversal, the Servants of India Society (SIS) on Saturday withdrew its earlier decision to remove noted economist Sanjeev Sanyal as the Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE). The move comes just two days after Sanyal was abruptly sacked from the prestigious position.

SIS president Damodar Sahoo issued a letter to Sanyal, stating that the earlier decision stemmed from a “misunderstanding” and a breakdown in communication. He acknowledged receiving a detailed letter from Sanyal addressing the concerns that had led to his removal.

“In light of your explanation and to avoid any further confusion, we request you to continue in your role as Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute,” Sahoo wrote in the letter.

Sanyal, a prominent economist and member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, was appointed Chancellor of GIPE in 2022. His sudden removal earlier this week had sparked debate in academic and policy circles, with many questioning the rationale behind the decision.

Founded in 1930, GIPE is one of India’s premier institutions for economic research and education, operating under the aegis of the SIS, which was established by freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gokhale.

The reinstatement of Sanyal signals a resolution to the controversy and is expected to restore stability at the historic institute.
