Shrinking Andean glaciers endanger water supply

Shrinking Andean Glaciers Threaten Water Supply for 90 Million People

Scientists from the University of Sheffield have issued a stark warning to global policymakers, highlighting that the rapid shrinking of Andean glaciers is endangering the water supply of 90 million people across South America.

Speaking at UNESCO’s first-ever World Day for Glaciers in Paris, researchers emphasized the critical role these glaciers play in providing water for domestic use, hydroelectric power, agriculture, and livestock farming across Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia.

A new policy brief, The Future of the Andean Water Towers, presented at the conference by experts from the Universities of Sheffield and Newcastle, outlines how climate change-driven glacial retreat is depleting crucial water sources.

Scientists are urging immediate global action to mitigate the impacts of glacier loss and ensure sustainable water management for millions dependent on these vital water reserves.
