SAIL Supplies Steel for Zojila Tunnel

SAIL Supplies Over 31,000 Tonnes of Steel for Strategic Zojila Tunnel Project

State-owned Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) announced on Monday that it has supplied over 31,000 tonnes of steel for the ongoing construction of the Zojila Tunnel, a critical infrastructure project on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway.

The Zojila Tunnel, once completed, will provide all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, significantly boosting both civilian and military logistics in the strategically important region. The tunnel is expected to enhance year-round accessibility, reduce travel time, and bolster India’s national security infrastructure.

SAIL, one of the largest steel-making companies in India, has contributed key materials including TMT rebars, structural steel, and steel plates essential for the massive engineering work involved in tunnel construction.

“SAIL is proud to be a part of this strategic infrastructure initiative. Our steel has been the backbone of several national projects, and our contribution to the Zojila Tunnel further underscores our commitment to nation-building,” a company spokesperson said.

The Zojila Tunnel project, being executed under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, is among the most challenging infrastructure undertakings in the Himalayan region due to extreme weather and rugged terrain. Once operational, it will be one of Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnels, playing a transformative role in regional development and strategic defense readiness.
