Rohit Sharma Retires from Test Cricket

India Captain Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement from Test Cricket
Mumbai, May 7 : Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing an end to a significant chapter in his illustrious career. The 37-year-old batter made the announcement through an emotional Instagram post on Tuesday.
“Hello everyone, I would like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” Rohit wrote.
Rohit Sharma, who made his Test debut in 2013, played 67 Tests and took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli in 2022. Under his leadership, India reached the final of the World Test Championship in 2023 but lost to Australia. He captained the team in 24 Tests, winning 12 of them, making him one of the most successful Indian Test captains by win percentage—second only to Kohli.
However, his Test captaincy also saw setbacks, including a historic 3-0 home series loss to New Zealand—the first in 12 years—and a 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. His struggles with form eventually led to his omission from the decisive fifth Test in Sydney.
Rohit had earlier stepped down from T20 internationals after leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. He remains active in One-Day Internationals and continues to captain the Indian team in that format, having recently led them to a Champions Trophy win in March.
Rohit Sharma leaves behind a significant legacy in Test cricket, not only as a prolific opener but also as a leader who played a key role during a transitional period for Indian cricket.
