Restored Classic ‘Manthan’ to Premiere at Cannes Film Festival
NEW DELHI: The revered 1976 film “Manthan” by acclaimed filmmaker Shyam Benegal is set to make a grand return at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder of Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), announced the screening of the restored version at the renowned event.
Starring the legendary Smita Patil, “Manthan” draws inspiration from Verghese Kurien’s revolutionary milk cooperative movement, famously known as ‘Operation Flood.’ Kurien’s efforts propelled India from a milk-deficient nation to the largest milk producer globally, birthing the iconic brand Amul.
As per the Cannes Film Festival website, “Manthan” will be showcased under Cannes Classics, a distinguished section dedicated to honoring cinematic legacies through restored prints and documentaries. This inclusion underscores the enduring relevance and timeless appeal of Benegal’s masterpiece on the global stage.
The screening of the restored “Manthan” at Cannes is a testament to its enduring cultural significance and reaffirms its status as a cinematic gem cherished by audiences worldwide.
