18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Begins in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar: The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention commenced in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, celebrating the contributions of the Indian diaspora to the nation’s development.

The event was inaugurated by Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, alongside Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandviya and Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally inaugurate the convention on January 9, with Christine Carla Kangaloo, President of Trinidad and Tobago, addressing the event virtually as the chief guest.

Ministerial delegations from Mauritius, Malaysia, and South Africa, along with diaspora representatives from Oman, Qatar, the UAE, the UK, and the USA, are attending the convention. The event will feature five plenary sessions chaired by Union Ministers and moderated by eminent personalities.

Cultural and Economic Highlights
The three-day conference celebrates the Indian diaspora’s socio-economic contributions and aims to foster deeper ties with Indians worldwide. Thematic sessions will address topics such as investment opportunities, digital collaboration, and cultural exchanges.

Odisha, the host state, is presenting its unique heritage and economic potential through special plenary sessions titled “Unraveling India’s Best Kept Secret” and “Odisha, a Land of Opportunities.” These sessions highlight opportunities in tourism, textiles, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and startups.

Delegates will also enjoy cultural programs and performances showcasing India’s rich traditions, as well as tours of Odisha’s iconic landmarks. The state government has arranged for delegates to savor authentic Odia cuisine, adding to the immersive experience.

A Platform for Global Engagement
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, first celebrated in 2003 by the Ministry of External Affairs, has become a pivotal platform for strengthening India’s engagement with its diaspora. This year’s convention continues the tradition, weaving themes of heritage, innovation, and global collaboration.

The conference is expected to bolster Indo-foreign relations and open new avenues for investment, trade, and cultural exchange. By celebrating the achievements of the Indian diaspora, the event underscores their role in shaping India’s future while fostering enduring global connections.
