PM Modi Inaugurates 46th World Heritage Committee Session in New Delhi

New Delhi, 21st July 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi today. This is the first time India is hosting the annual meeting, which runs from July 21 to July 31, 2024.
In his address, PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to global cooperation and heritage conservation. He highlighted the significance of India’s ancient heritage and its role in advancing scientific and architectural knowledge. The Prime Minister celebrated the inclusion of Maidam from Northeast India into the UNESCO World Heritage list, marking it as the first heritage site from the region to receive this honor.
Modi also praised the return of over 350 ancient artifacts from abroad, describing it as a sign of global respect for history. He pointed out India’s rich history, mentioning key sites like Dholavira and Lothal for their urban planning and water management.
The Prime Minister urged global unity in promoting and preserving heritage, advocating for the integration of heritage with modern development. He announced a $1 million contribution from India to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to support conservation efforts in the Global South and introduced a new certificate program in World Heritage Management for young professionals.
The meeting, attended by over 2,000 delegates from more than 150 countries, includes discussions on new site nominations, conservation reports, and international assistance. Various exhibitions, including the Return of Treasures Exhibition and immersive AR & VR experiences of Indian heritage sites, are also part of the event.
Union Minister for External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, UNESCO Director General Ms. Audrey Azoulay, and Chairperson of the World Heritage Committee Shri Vishal Sharma were present at the inauguration.
The session aims to strengthen global efforts in heritage conservation and foster international collaboration in preserving cultural and historical treasures.
