Payal Kapadia on ‘All We Imagine As Light’: Cinema Closer to Poetry Than Prose

Filmmaker Payal Kapadia, whose critically acclaimed film All We Imagine As Light won the prestigious Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival this May, believes that cinema can sometimes be closer to poetry than prose.

In an interview with PTI, Kapadia shared her thoughts on the deeply poetic nature of her film, which explores the inner world of women and the vibrant city of Mumbai through the lens of two Malayali nurses. The film is an ode to the emotional landscape of women and their connection to the city they call home.

“I like literature a lot so I keep thinking about making the dialogues a little more literary. I believe cinema can sometimes be closer to poetry than prose. The story is there no doubt but can we have fun with that in the telling? That’s what I enjoy the most,” said Kapadia.

The film blends literary elements with sound to create a lyrical experience, using its narrative to offer a unique perspective on life and identity. All We Imagine As Light has received widespread praise for its innovative storytelling, blending realism and lyricism to capture the nuances of daily life and human emotions.
